Overview

Beyond Learning, is an online platform where parents can find tutors, and tutors can children in need. The concept of Beyond Learning is that the brand partners with school districts to help those who may be falling behind get the help that they need.

When you use the platform, either web or mobile app, the user is prompted through a tutor focused journey or a parent focused journey.

Research Summery

I conducted most of my research utilizing second-hand research, gathering information google, quora, and other forum sites. In my research found various parents going into great detail on there opinions on what makes a good tutor and how to find one.

Keywords that stuck out in the research were; expertise, empathy, and of course cost. Out of three, empathy being the biggest point of emphasis.

Shawn, a married mother of two, is facing challenges with her son Erick's academic troubles in several subjects. With a full-time employment at Target, it's been strenuous for her to find a suitable tutor that aligns with the family's timetable. Shawn’s worry is that Erick’s lack of interest in subjects like math and science is dragging down his grades to the point where he may not be able to transition to the 7th grade. Shawn frequently uses her phone at work during her breaks and downtime. If she could browse through a selection of tutors and understand the services they provide all on her mobile while at work, it would be hugely beneficial. This convenience would allow Shawn to shortlist prospective tutors and thus, by the time she clocks out from work, the initial steps of finding a tutor would have already been undertaken.

Hypothesis & Goals

Hypothesis & Goals

After careful examination and comparing online tutoring versus in person, I decided to create an experience that connected parents and tutors an in-person experience. The app would guide the user, parent or tutor, through an onboarding experience to get an understanding of who the user is.

Guiding Principles & framework

1.Friendly: Though parents and tutors are the intended users of the app, I wanted the visual design to be geared towards children and learning. I wanted to make sure the child isn't forgotten in this process because they will be the most impacted as the result.

2.Clean and simple navigation: create universal and simple navigation. Navigation bar on all screens and can easily exit out of a prompt if user is not ready or may have miss clicked a button.

Early Challenges

Creating wireframes to help establish style and navigation were pretty simple. Taking inspiration from standards in ux right now, such as horizontal scrolling and cards. One of my first challenges were structuring the card design in a way to fully see the auto layer the elements in Figma.

The second challenge I faced in this stage was 'what' was the content and 'where' was it going. Having to create the content or, at least the idea of content, was on my at the beginning of project. And I wanted the wireframes to be reflective of what each screen could potentially look like.

As screens and layouts were built rapid testing quickly ensued, always keeping the average smartphone user in mind. If buttons don't work as intended or sections don't scroll properly, it is back to iterating.

A difference in card design

The goal here with the different card design was to put more emphasis on empathy as tutors search for requests. The tutors are looking to solve a problem by helping children succeed, I put images as backgrounds to the cards to give a face to the person a tutor could potentially be helping.

Great deal of learning

This being my first mobile app design, there was a lot that I didn't know. I learned a lot about the work flow from the early stages, reiterating the middle and being detailed and thorough until the end.

I thought the prompt was simple at first but designing work flows for two user was a very tedious task
